Now begins the account of our Scandinavian road tour (with Grandma Jane)!
We hit the road early on Friday. Our route took us past Utøya, where so many young people were shot the week before. We stopped to see the flowers and think on the tragedy.
Then stopped for a picnic lunch, where Annie climbed atop a bear:
Visited the famous Borgund stave church, built about 1200 AD.And later arrived in Flåm, where we took a train ride past dozens of waterfalls and some of the most gorgeous scenery on Earth!
We slept in the attic of a quaint old farmhouse called Brekke Gård. :)
We’d been looking forward to this all year...Grandma’s visit! We picked her up from the airport, and brought her home where she could see our house and neighborhood, and spend three weeks with us! (end of July through the first half of August)
These are some pictures that she took the first day. They show our “guest room” (office) where Grandma slept, the boys playing with the new Lego cars she gave them, and the heart waffles we ate to celebrate our wedding anniversary--Carl and I. :)
After 1-2 days of rest and packing and enjoying each other, we departed on a 12-day road tour of Scandinavia! We had a really great time together, and saw some wondrous things. More details of the trip to come...
We then returned and spent the third week showing Grandma around Oslo and it’s environs. We were so grateful for this time with Grandma, and were sad to see her depart!
The Monday following the awful bomb and shootings in Oslo/Utøya, there was a flower vigil held in the city. We decided to take the unique opportunity to participate, and added our small numbers to the roughly 150,000 that were packed downtown. It was amazing to witness the "coming together" of so many people, holding up their flowers in a moment of silence.
